When a New York City construction crane mysteriously collapses, causing mass destruction and injury, Rhyme and Sachs are on the case. A political group claims responsibility for the sabotage and threatens another attack in twenty-four hours, unless its demands are met. The clock is ticking.
Then a clue reveals to Rhyme that his nemesis, known as the Watchmaker, has come to town to fulfill his promise of murdering the criminalist. Now Rhyme and Sachs have to dodge his brilliant scheme to destroy them both, while racing against time to stop the construction site terrorists.
With New York in a panic, Rhyme and his team must unravel a handful of plots as tightly wound as a timepiece—before more cranes fall, raining down death and destruction from above.

Undercooked plotting muddies Deaver’s bloated 16th thriller featuring Lincoln Rhyme (after The Midnight Lock), in which the quadriplegic NYPD detective faces off against a master criminal from his past. At the start, Rhyme is hoping to close a months-old case involving the theft of confidential records about the city’s infrastructure. The investigation takes on added urgency when someone sabotages the counterweight systems on a construction crane in Manhattan, killing one worker. After that attack, the mayor receives an email from an anonymous group called the Kommunalka Project threatening a similar disaster every 24 hours if he doesn’t create an affordable housing nonprofit and transfer a list of properties to its operations. While Rhyme races to anticipate the Kommunalka Project’s next move, evidence emerges indicating that his old adversary, a brilliant murderer known as the Watchmaker, might be pulling the strings. Deaver occasionally achieves the grandeur of the best hero-villain rematches, but too often, he takes the wind out of his sails with lazy plot contrivances, including tough to swallow lapses in judgment from the otherwise unassailable Watchmaker. Only diehard series fans need apply. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary. -

Edoardo Ballerini returns to add immediacy and authority to the latest Lincoln Rhyme audiobook, which once again features his helper, Thom Reston; his partner, Amelia Sachs; and, of course, his old nemesis, the Watchmaker. When a crane falls off the roof of a skyscraper and a group threatens more mayhem to come, the city goes on alert. It soon becomes apparent that the Watchmaker is behind the plot. Rhyme has to foil the villain's ultimate goal before many more people are harmed. Ballerini keeps the listener engaged with his clear, urgent delivery. It's not necessary to be familiar with other Lincoln Rhyme novels to enjoy this audiobook, but listeners will be more appreciative of the story and its characters if they have.
